GP Referral Scheme
The BEATS GP Referral Scheme located in Barrow Leisure supports eligible patients to become more active through a safe, structured and supportive 12-week activity plan.
Healthcare professionals can refer patients who would benefit from guided physical activity to help improve their health, confidence and overall wellbeing, with support from the BEATS team throughout their journey.
Aims of the Programme
The BEATS programme aims to help eligible patients become more active in a safe, supported and sustainable way.The programme supports patients to:
- Increase their physical activity levels
- Improve overall health and wellbeing
- Build confidence with exercise
- Develop strength, mobility and general fitness
- Support the management of long-term health conditions
- Reduce barriers to becoming active
- Build healthier habits that can continue beyond the referral period
Each patient’s programme is designed around their medical needs, interests, ability and confidence level, helping them take part in physical activity safely and at a pace they can manage.
Who is suitable for referral?
Patients may be suitable for BEATS if they:
- Would benefit from increasing their physical activity
- Have mild to moderate, controlled health conditions
- Are sedentary or physically inactive
- Are motivated to become more active
- Can communicate and follow instructions
- Live in the Barrow-in-Furness area

Please ensure that all contraindications to exercise are included in the referral form as not doing so could delay the start date for the referral as we will need to contact the GP for a rereferral regarding suitability to exercise.
Who should not be referred?
BEATS may not be suitable for high-risk patients or those with absolute contraindications to exercise. This may include patients who are:
- Under the eligible age for the scheme
- Undergoing investigations or awaiting test results
- Experiencing febrile illness
- Presenting with blood pressure above 180/100
- Diagnosed with active pericarditis or myocarditis
- Recently affected by embolism or thrombophlebitis
- Experiencing uncontrolled or unstable diabetes, arrhythmia, tachycardia, symptomatic heart failure, asthma, angina or acute mental illness
- Diagnosed with stroke, TIA or angina within the last three months
- Living with a condition outside the qualification scope of the BEATS instructor
If you are unsure whether a patient is suitable, please contact the BEATS team before submitting the referral.
WHAT WE OFFER
Each patients programme will be tailored to their health needs, preferences and confidence levels.
MAKING A REFERRAL
We accept referrals from GPs and allied health professionals who:
- Have knowledge of the patient’s medical history, current health status and medication.
- Can make a clinical judgement as to the suitability of the scheme for the patient.
- Can provide the necessary information about the patient (e.g., address, telephone number, date of birth, blood pressure etc).
