GP Referral Scheme

The BEATS GP Referral Scheme located in Barrow Leisure supports eligible patients to become more active through a safe, structured and supportive 12-week activity plan.

Healthcare professionals can refer patients who would benefit from guided physical activity to help improve their health, confidence and overall wellbeing, with support from the BEATS team throughout their journey.

Aims of the Programme

The BEATS programme aims to help eligible patients become more active in a safe, supported and sustainable way.The programme supports patients to:

  • Increase their physical activity levels
  • Improve overall health and wellbeing
  • Build confidence with exercise
  • Develop strength, mobility and general fitness
  • Support the management of long-term health conditions
  • Reduce barriers to becoming active
  • Build healthier habits that can continue beyond the referral period

Each patient’s programme is designed around their medical needs, interests, ability and confidence level, helping them take part in physical activity safely and at a pace they can manage.

Who is suitable for referral?

Patients may be suitable for BEATS if they:

  • Would benefit from increasing their physical activity
  • Have mild to moderate, controlled health conditions
  • Are sedentary or physically inactive
  • Are motivated to become more active
  • Can communicate and follow instructions
  • Live in the Barrow-in-Furness area

For examples of mild to moderate and controlled health conditions please contact us at healthandfitness@barrowleisure.co.uk

Please ensure that all contraindications to exercise are included in the referral form as not doing so could delay the start date for the referral as we will need to contact the GP for a rereferral regarding suitability to exercise.
